Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary came out for the Nintendo DS in 2011, developed and published by Sega. It arrived late in the DS lifecycle, a time when the system was packed with puzzle games, but this one stood out for its sheer dedication to the series' history. It felt like a proper celebration, a compilation that respected its roots while giving players plenty to do.

You control a cursor to drop pairs of colored, gelatinous blobs called Puyo into a well. The main goal is to create chains by connecting four or more of the same color; these chains pop and send nuisance Puyo to clutter your opponent's screen. Key mechanics include setting up large, screen clearing combos and using special rules or items to turn the tide of a match. The pacing is fast and often unforgiving, demanding quick decisions and spatial awareness. It feels satisfying to set off a huge chain and watch your opponent's field get buried under a pile of garbage.
