Game Overview

I first played Puyo Puyo on the Game Boy back in 1993, a port of the arcade game by Compile. It was a time when puzzle games were really finding their footing on handhelds, and this one stood out for its personality and competitive edge. It felt right at home on the small screen, a perfect fit for quick sessions or longer grinds against the AI.

You control a cursor to rotate and place pairs of colored, gelatinous blobs called Puyos as they fall from the top of the screen. The main objective is to clear your own board by connecting four or more of the same color while simultaneously sending nuisance blocks to your opponent's side. The signature mechanics are all about building and triggering chain reactions; you set up large groups so that clearing one set causes others to drop and connect, creating a massive cascade. The pacing is fast and the difficulty ramps up quickly, demanding you think several moves ahead. It feels incredibly rewarding to set off a huge chain and see your planning pay off as your opponent's field gets flooded.
