Game Overview

Puyo Puyo 7 came out for the Nintendo DS in 2009, developed and published by Sega. It was part of that era when the DS was full of quirky puzzle games, and this one fit right in with its bright colors and familiar, yet expanded, cast of characters. It didn't try to reinvent the wheel, just offered more ways to play a classic formula.

You control falling pairs of gelatinous blobs, called Puyos, rotating and placing them to create groups of four or more of the same color. The main goal is to set off chain reactions that dump garbage onto your opponent's screen, either clearing stages in single-player or winning matches against others. Two key mechanics are the new Style Change system, which lets you swap between different rule sets like Fever or Big Bang during a match, and the ability to perform massive counterattacks after surviving an opponent's large chain. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty ramps up quickly, demanding you think several moves ahead. It feels like a constant, delightful scramble to outmaneuver whatever the game or another player throws at you.
