Game Overview

I first played Puyo Puyo on the Sega Genesis in 1992, a game developed by Compile. It was a time when puzzle games were really finding their footing on consoles, and this one stood out with its bright colors and strange cast of characters. It didn't try to be the next big thing; it was just a solid, clever game you could pick up and play.

You control a cursor to rotate and place pairs of colored blobs, called Puyo, that fall from the top of the screen. The main objective is to connect four or more of the same color to make them pop, clearing space and sending nuisance Puyo over to your opponent's field. The real strategy comes from setting up chain reactions, where one pop causes another group to fall and pop in sequence, creating a massive counterattack. The pacing is quick, and the difficulty ramps up sharply against the computer, especially in the later stages. It feels incredibly satisfying to set off a huge chain and watch your opponent's screen fill up with garbage blocks.
