Game Overview

Puyo Puyo Party came out for the Nintendo 64 in 1999, developed by Compile. It was part of that late 90s wave of puzzle games that really leaned into competitive multiplayer, especially on a console known for its four controller ports. While it didn't redefine the genre, it offered a solid, colorful entry that felt right at home alongside other party favorites of the era.

You control a character from the series' cast, dropping pairs of colored puyo blobs into a well. The main goal is to create chain reactions by grouping four or more of the same color, which sends nuisance puyo to your opponent's screen. Key mechanics include the all clear bonus, which wipes your board clean for a big attack, and the ability to counter an incoming chain by quickly building one of your own. The pacing starts deceptively slow but can escalate into a frantic back-and-forth, especially against a skilled opponent. It feels satisfying to set off a huge chain and see your planning pay off.
