Puzzle Bobble 4 came out in arcades in 1997, developed by Taito. It was part of that era when puzzle games still ruled the arcade floor, sitting alongside fighting games and racers. You would drop a coin into the machine, grab the joystick, and get ready for some focused bubble popping.
You control a little dinosaur at the bottom of the screen who shoots colored bubbles upward. Your main goal is to clear each screen of bubbles by matching three or more of the same color. The key mechanics involve aiming your shots carefully to create clusters, using ricochets off the side walls to reach tricky spots, and causing chain reactions to clear large sections at once. The game starts calmly but the pace picks up as the ceiling of bubbles slowly descends, raising the tension with each move. It feels satisfying to watch a well-planned shot erase a huge chunk of the puzzle.
