Game Overview
R-Type Leo is that weird middle child of the R-Type series—not quite a mainline entry, but still packing that signature brutal shmup action. Instead of fighting the usual Bydo Empire, you're up against a rogue bio-computer that hijacked an entire artificial planet. Feels like someone watched 2001 before designing this one.
They shook up the weapons system here—no Force or Wave Cannon, which feels blasphemous at first. Instead, you get these Bit Devices that move with your ship and can be flung at enemies like homing wrecking balls. Took me a few runs to stop missing the old tools, but the Bits grow on you once you figure out their rhythm. Oh, and it’s the first R-Type where you can drag a friend into the chaos with co-op, which is either a blessing or a recipe for screaming matches, depending on your piloting skills.
Still has that classic "die in three hits and restart the whole stage" arcade cruelty, though. Some traditions never change.
