Play Rad Racer Online
NES racer with janky 3D mode and aggressive AI cars. Hitting checkpoints buys you time as roads get nastier.
Rad Racer came out for the NES in 1987, developed by Square. It was one of the early attempts at a 3D racing game on the console, a time when developers were still figuring out how to make polygonal graphics work on such limited hardware. It stood out for its sense of speed and its ambitious, if slightly rough, visual style.
You control a Formula One style race car from a behind the vehicle perspective. The main goal is simply to finish each course before your timer hits zero, which you extend by driving through floating checkpoints. The signature mechanics involve shifting between high and low gears for better control on sharp turns, and a pseudo 3D mode you can toggle that adds a surprising amount of depth to the flat, scaling road. The other cars on the track are aggressively competitive, often swerving into your path, and the courses themselves get progressively more demanding with sharper curves and obstacles. It feels like a constant, tense battle against both the clock and the road.
