Man, The Revenge of Shinobi still holds up as one of the tightest action-platformers on the Genesis. You play as Joe Musashi, this ninja with a serious grudge, flipping through stages that range from neon-lit city rooftops to creepy-ass temples. The controls feel just right—shurikens fly smooth, jumps land where you expect, and the sword slashes have this satisfying weight to them.
Yuzo Koshiro’s soundtrack? Absolute fire. You’ll recognize his style if you’ve played Streets of Rage, but here it’s all moody synths and driving beats that somehow make throwing ninja stars at cyborgs feel even cooler. Some of the bosses are total bullshit (looking at you, Spider-Man knockoff), but figuring out their patterns is half the fun. This is the kind of game where you die a lot, but never feel cheated—just tempted to try one more time.
