Game Overview
River City Ransom EX takes everything great about the NES original—the ridiculous street fights, the weirdly satisfying RPG upgrades, the way you can just eat a whole pizza mid-brawl—and makes it feel right at home on the GBA. You’re still punching delinquents into trash cans and robbing them for lunch money, but now the sprites are crisper, the controls are snappier, and there’s a bunch of new moves to accidentally discover while button-mashing.
What I love is how it doesn’t just coast on nostalgia. The combat’s got weight to it—landing a well-timed bicycle kick feels stupidly good—and the open-ended progression means you might spend 20 minutes grinding for stats at the gym or just go full chaos mode with a lead pipe. Also, the localization’s still hilariously broken in that charming 80s way. "BARF!"
It’s one of those games where you start playing for five minutes and suddenly it’s been two hours because you absolutely need to see if the nunchucks are better than the kung fu books this time. Spoiler: they usually are.
