River City Ransom EX came out on the Game Boy Advance in 2004, published by Atlus. It was a solid update of the NES original, fitting right in with the GBA's library of classic remakes and arcade-style action games. This version kept the spirit of the old brawler but cleaned up the presentation for the handheld screen.
You control Alex or Ryan, a student fighting through waves of gang members across the city. The main goal is to rescue your girlfriend from the kidnappers, but the real fun is in the brawling and shopping. You explore the city screen by screen, punching and kicking enemies to earn money, then spend that cash on food and books to permanently upgrade your stats and learn new special moves. The pacing is quick, with short bursts of combat broken up by trips to the mall, though some later enemy gangs can be surprisingly tough. It feels satisfying to build up your character and finally land those powerful wrestling moves you saved up for.
