Game Overview

Sakigake!! Otoko Juku: Shippuu Ichi Gou Sei came out for the NES in 1989, published by Bandai. It's a side-scrolling beat 'em up based on a popular manga, landing right in the middle of the console's lifespan when licensed games were a common, if often messy, affair.

You control one of three students from the manga, moving from left to right to clear each stage of enemies. Your main goal is to punch and kick your way through an endless stream of comically over-muscled thugs. The game uses a two-button setup for attacks and jumps, and you can perform a screen-clearing special move once your power meter is full. The pacing is relentless, throwing large groups of enemies at you constantly, and the difficulty can feel cheap due to some awkward hit detection. It feels like a frantic, slightly broken arcade experience crammed onto a cartridge.
