Play Salamand Online

Game Overview

Okay, so Salamand (or Life Force if you're not playing the Japanese version) is basically Gradius cranked up to 11—same satisfying power-up system, but everything moves faster and gets way more chaotic. The first level throws these weird, pulsing alien walls at you while the soundtrack does its best to give you a heart attack. And yeah, you can play co-op, which is either twice the fun or twice the screaming when your friend accidentally flies into a wall.

What I love is how gross the enemies are—like, half the bosses look like they escaped from a Cronenberg movie. The controls are stupidly tight, though, so when you die (and you will), it’s always your fault. Just don’t get too attached to those Option drones—one wrong move and they’re space dust.

It’s short, brutal, and exactly what you want from an NES shooter that doesn’t mess around.
