Game Overview

Sangokushi on the Game Boy Advance is basically the Three Kingdoms saga crammed into your pocket—and it works way better than you'd expect. You start by picking a warlord (I went with Cao Cao first, because of course), and suddenly you're managing cities, sending generals on raids, and negotiating with rivals who'll backstab you the second it's convenient. The battles are turn-based but surprisingly quick, with terrain and unit types actually mattering instead of just being window dressing.

What surprised me is how much personality comes through despite the GBA's tiny screen. Liu Bei's forces feel different from Sun Quan's, and you'll catch yourself making decisions based on who historically betrayed whom—even though the game never outright tells you to. The music's this great mix of chiptune and traditional Chinese instruments that somehow makes managing tax rates feel dramatic. Just be warned: "I'll stop after this battle" turns into five more battles real fast.

It's the perfect mix of depth and pick-up-and-play chaos for bus rides, though I did once accidentally conquer half of China while waiting for a dentist appointment.
