Game Overview

SD Sengokuden: Kunitori Monogatari came out for the Game Boy in 1991, published by Bandai. It was part of that wave of early handheld games that tried to pack a lot of strategy into a small screen, using a super-deformed style to retell Japan's Sengoku period. You don't see many games like this anymore; it has a particular, compact charm from that era.

You control a small warlord, moving from screen to screen on an overworld map to engage enemy forces in tactical battles. Your main goal is to conquer all enemy castles on each stage. The game combines simple exploration with turn-based army movement and direct action combat when you encounter enemies; you can choose to fight with a sword or use a bow for ranged attacks. It moves at a deliberate pace, and the difficulty can spike unexpectedly in later stages. Playing it feels like managing a very small, very determined campaign from the palm of your hand.
