Section-Z came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1985, developed and published by Capcom. It was part of that early wave of NES games that tried to push beyond simple arcade ports, offering a longer, more exploratory experience. You control a soldier in a powered suit, sent into a massive alien structure called the Balangool. The goal is to navigate its twisting, multi-branching corridors, find the exit in each section, and ultimately destroy the core.

You move screen by screen through the fortress, shooting a wide array of alien creatures and mechanical traps. A defining mechanic is the ability to shoot both left and right, a simple but crucial feature for dealing with enemies swarming from all directions. The game is structured into distinct areas, and you often have to choose between branching paths, some leading to dead ends or necessary power-ups like enhanced shots and speed boosts. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty is steep, demanding precise movement and quick shooting decisions. It feels like a tense, methodical crawl through a hostile and unpredictable environment.
