I picked up Sega Smash Pack for my Game Boy Advance back in 2002, a compilation put together by Sega themselves. It was a solid little cartridge to have during that era, a time when having a few arcade classics in your pocket still felt like a novelty. It wasn't trying to be anything more than a straightforward collection of some of their older hits.

You jump between controlling different characters depending on the game, from a speedy blue hedgehog to a spaceship pilot. The main goal is simply to beat each included title, which involves running through loops, shooting alien invaders, and solving simple puzzles. Signature mechanics change with each game; you might be collecting rings to stay alive, destroying waves of enemies for points, or navigating maze-like stages. The pacing is generally fast, and some of the older titles retain their original, unforgiving difficulty. It feels like flipping through a well-worn arcade catalog, each game offering a quick, distinct burst of that classic Sega energy.
