Shadow of the Beast III on the Amiga is one of those games that sticks with you—mostly because of how punishingly hard it is, but also because of its weird, eerie atmosphere. You play as Aarbron, this half-human, half-beast guy trying to undo his curse, and the whole thing feels like a dark fantasy painting come to life. The music alone gives me chills.

Gameplay’s a mix of side-scrolling combat and exploration, with some seriously clunky controls that take getting used to. You’ll die a lot—like, a lot—but there’s something weirdly satisfying about finally nailing a jump or landing a hit just right. The backgrounds are gorgeous for the time, all moody and detailed, though good luck enjoying them when you’re getting mauled by yet another enemy.

If you’ve got the patience for old-school difficulty, it’s worth seeing through to the end—just don’t expect it to hold your hand.
