Simpsons: Bart vs the Space Mutants came out on Sega Genesis in 1992, developed by Imagineering Inc. It was part of that wave of early 90s licensed games, where you got a lot of cartoon characters in platformers that tried to capture the show's humor, sometimes successfully, sometimes not. The graphics were bright and did a good job of making Springfield feel like the TV show.

You control Bart Simpson through five levels set in different parts of town. Your main goal is to stop an alien invasion, which mostly involves finding and spraying purple objects before the aliens can use them for their plans. The gameplay is built around these item-based tasks, like collecting and using rocket fireworks or throwing marbles to trip up enemies. It's a tough game; the platforming is unforgiving and the objectives aren't always clear, leading to a lot of trial and error. Playing it feels like a constant scramble to figure out what you're supposed to do next before something kills you.
