Skull & Crossbones is a 1990 Nintendo Entertainment System game developed by Tengen. It came out during a time when the NES library was overflowing with side-scrolling action titles, and it tried to stand out with a weird pirate theme instead of the usual knights or soldiers.
You control one of two pirates, hacking your way through screen after screen of enemies like ninjas and skeletons. The main goal is to rescue a kidnapped princess by fighting through pirate ships and haunted castles. The combat is simple, just swinging your sword, but it has a strange, clunky rhythm that you eventually get used to. You also find keys to unlock doors and collect power-ups to increase your health. The game is fairly difficult, with enemies swarming you from all sides, but the levels are short and the action is constant. It feels like playing a goofy, low-budget pirate cartoon from another dimension.
