Game Overview

Skull & Crossbones is one of those weird, forgotten NES games that somehow slipped past Nintendo's usual approval process—Tengen just went ahead and released it without the official seal. You play as a pair of pirates (One Eye and Red Dog, because of course those are their names) slicing through waves of enemies that somehow include both ninjas and zombies. The levels jump from pirate ships to creepy castles, and the whole thing feels like someone threw every 80s action trope into a blender.

It’s clunky in that classic NES way—hit detection is iffy, and some enemies just don’t seem to care when you swing your sword at them. But there’s something charming about how over-the-top it is, like the way the wizard boss just casually floats around shooting magic at you while you try not to fall into pits. If you’re into weird retro oddities, this one’s worth a look—just don’t expect it to play fair.
