Sky Smasher came out in 1990 as an arcade game from Nihon Bussan, a developer known for a few other shooters around that time. It fits right in with the era's top-down vertical scrollers, where you guide a ship through waves of patterned enemy attacks and dense bullet spreads.
You pilot a small fighter, moving freely across the screen while holding down the fire button to shoot continuously. The main goal is simply to survive as long as possible, clearing each stage by defeating all enemies and avoiding their projectiles. Two key mechanics stand out: collecting power-ups that widen your shot or add options, and a smart bomb that clears the screen when things get too chaotic. The pacing is relentless, with enemy formations becoming increasingly aggressive and complex.
