Game Overview

Spider-Man and the X-Men in Arcade's Revenge came out on the Sega Genesis in 1992, developed by Software Creations. It was one of those early 90s platformers that tried to cash in on the comic book craze, and it definitely has that specific, slightly janky feel of the era. You get to play as five different characters from the Marvel universe, which was a pretty big deal back then, even if the execution was a bit rough around the edges.

You control Spider-Man, Wolverine, Storm, Gambit, and Cyclops, each with their own unique stages and abilities. The main goal is to rescue your fellow heroes who have been captured by Arcade in his murderous theme park, Murderworld. The gameplay involves a lot of screen by screen platforming, avoiding instant death traps, and using character specific powers like webbing or optic blasts to defeat enemies. The pacing is slow and deliberate, mostly because the difficulty is notoriously unforgiving; one wrong move often means starting the entire stage over. It feels like a constant, frustrating test of patience, punctuated by moments of genuine satisfaction when you finally nail a tricky jump sequence.
