Stagger I came out in 1992 for arcades, developed by Arcade Dynamics. It was part of that wave of early 90s shooters where developers were pushing hardware to handle more sprites and faster action. The game didn't break new ground, but it had a clean look and ran smoothly, which mattered when every quarter counted.
You pilot a small fighter through vertically scrolling stages, shooting down enemy craft and dodging their patterned bullet spreads. Your main goal is to survive each level and defeat the boss waiting at the end. Key mechanics include collecting power-ups to upgrade your main weapon and a screen clearing bomb you can deploy in tight spots. The pacing is relentless; enemies pour in from all sides, and later levels demand precise movement and quick decision making. It feels tense and satisfying when you weave through a dense barrage and come out the other side.
