I picked up Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back for the Game Boy back in 1992, a Lucasfilm Games release that tried to pack the film's scope into a tiny cartridge. It was a time when portable games were simple, often adaptations of bigger console titles, and this one was no exception. You got five levels based on key scenes, from the Battle of Hoth to the duel with Vader, all rendered in that familiar green-and-black pixel art.

You control Luke Skywalker through side-scrolling stages, switching between a snowspeeder on Hoth, an X-wing in the asteroid field, and on-foot sections where you use your lightsaber and blaster. The main goal is to survive each stage, destroying AT-ATs, dodging TIE fighters, and eventually facing Boba Fett and Darth Vader. Signature mechanics include the grappling hook for taking down walkers, deflecting blaster bolts with your lightsaber, and navigating tight platforming sections. The pacing is brisk but the difficulty is steep, with limited continues and some unforgiving enemy patterns. It feels like a condensed, sometimes frustrating, but earnest attempt to bring the movie's action to your palms.
