Stargate on the Sega Genesis came out in 1995 from Probe Entertainment, a time when movie tie-ins were a regular sight on the console. It was based on the film, but it felt like its own thing, a side-scrolling run and gun that tried to capture the adventure of the story.
You control Colonel Jack O'Neil, moving screen by screen through Egyptian-themed levels and alien environments. The main goal is to fight your way to the end of each stage, shooting Jaffa soldiers and avoiding traps. You collect different staff weapons to switch up your firepower, and you have to find keys to unlock doors blocking your path. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty can be punishing, especially with the limited continues. It feels like a solid, straightforward shooter that demands quick reflexes and careful exploration.
