Super Widget is one of those weird, charming SNES platformers that feels like it fell out of a Saturday morning cartoon. You play as a purple alien (with a floating brain sidekick, naturally) tasked with saving Earth from eco-villains. The gimmick? Collecting power-ups transforms you into different creatures—a yeti, a dragon, even a weird fish thing—each with their own attack style. Stack three of the same power-up and you evolve into a beefed-up version, though getting hit knocks you down a tier.
The levels are bright and chaotic, tossing you through jungles, cities, and factories while you hunt for those shiny "W" coins (grab 100 for an extra life). Boss fights are classic pattern memorization—dodge the telegraphed attacks, chip away when you get an opening. What I love is the grading system after each stage; they actually judge you on speed and combat finesse, which adds some replay value when you realize you got a "C" for button-mashing your way through.
It’s not the deepest platformer, but the transformations keep things unpredictable, and the whole thing oozes early '90s cartoon energy. Just don’t expect the plot to make much sense—you’re a space alien fighting a guy in a business suit who hates trees. Classic.
