Play Takahashi Meijin no Bouken Jima (Japan) Online

You sprint through jungles in a loincloth, chucking axes at spiders and riding skateboards over rolling eggs—until one wrong jump sends you back to the start. That bouncy music almost makes the pain feel good.

Game Overview

I first played Takahashi Meijin no Bouken Jima on the NES back in 1986, a game Hudson Soft put out that felt right at home among the platformers and action titles of the era. It was known in some circles as Adventure Island outside Japan, but I always knew it by its original name. The game didn't try to reinvent the wheel, but it had a certain charm and challenge that kept me coming back.

You control a character, often called Master Higgins, who runs and jumps through side scrolling stages filled with enemies like snails and bats. Your main goal is to rescue your girlfriend, Tina, from an evil witch, which means surviving across multiple islands, each with their own themed levels. You throw axes or boomerangs as weapons, and you ride skateboards for bursts of speed, though they make stopping tricky. The pacing is relentless; you have to keep moving because a fruit meter constantly depletes, and if it runs out, you lose a life. One hit from an enemy or obstacle sends you back to the last checkpoint, and the difficulty ramps up quickly, demanding precise jumps and quick reactions. It feels tense and urgent, especially when you're low on fruit and scrambling for the next checkpoint.
