Play The Bard's Tale Online
Grab a ragtag crew and crawl through Skara Brae’s frozen dungeons—if wolves don’t pick you off first, you might just outdrink Mangar’s curse.

I first played The Bard's Tale on the NES in 1985, a release from Interplay Productions. It was a time when dungeon crawlers were finding their footing on consoles, offering a deeper, more complex kind of adventure than many other games available. This one stood out for its sheer ambition, trying to translate a dense computer RPG experience onto the Nintendo.
You control a party of up to six characters, creating fighters, mages, and rogues from scratch to venture into the cursed city of Skara Brae. The main goal is to defeat the evil wizard Mangar, who has encased the town in an eternal winter. You explore the world screen by screen in first-person, mapping dungeons on graph paper as you go; combat is turn-based, requiring careful management of spells and health for your entire group. The pacing is deliberate, almost slow, and the difficulty is punishing, with frequent random encounters that can wipe out an unprepared party in moments. It feels like a genuine struggle for survival, where every bit of progress is earned through careful planning and a little luck.
