So your mentor Mordamir vanished—probably snatched by some dungeon-dwelling creep. You don't have much to go on, but hey, when in doubt, head underground, right? The first dark hole you find seems as good as any, so down you go. Eight brutal floors later, you'll either find him or die trying. Probably both, knowing this game.

The Immortal is one of those NES games that feels like it's actively trying to murder you. The isometric view makes traps harder to spot, and every new room is basically a puzzle where the penalty for failure is instant death. You'll die a lot. Like, a lot. But each time, you learn—oh, that pressure plate triggers the spikes, or that weird potion actually turns you invisible for exactly three seconds. Some puzzles are straightforward (don't step there), others make you scratch your head (why does throwing a rock at that wall open a door?).

Not everyone down here wants you dead, though. Some weirdos actually trade items or drop hints—if you can find them before the skeletons do. Combat's this tense back-and-forth where enemies telegraph their moves, so you've got a split second to dodge left, right, or strike first. No saves, but you can retry levels endlessly (and you will). Oh, and there's this ridiculous magic carpet section that still gives me nightmares. Passwords let you skip ahead, but where's the fun in that?
