Play The Pirates of Dark Water (January 1994) Online
Swing your sword through jungles and pirate ships, dodging janky traps while those glorious Genesis-era bosses fill the screen. It’s rough, but the synth-heavy soundtrack and episodic levels totally nail the show’s weird pirate adventure vibe.
The Pirates of Dark Water came out for the Sega Genesis in 1994, developed by Sunsoft and published by Sega. It was based on the animated series, and it fit right in with the platform's library of action games that tried to capture the feel of Saturday morning cartoons. You could tell it was a product of its time, with colorful sprites and a focus on straightforward, level-based action.
You play as Ren, the young hero, and your goal is to collect the Thirteen Treasures of Rule to save the world of Mer from the Dark Water. The game plays out screen by screen, with you using your sword to fight off creatures and pirates, and occasionally switching to a bow for ranged attacks. You explore different environments, like dense forests and pirate ships, while avoiding traps and searching for keys to progress. The pacing can be uneven, and some sections feel unfairly difficult due to awkward enemy placement or tricky jumps. Even with its rough edges, moving through each stage and hearing that synth soundtrack gives it a distinct, adventurous feel.
