The Pirates of Dark Water came out on Sega Genesis in 1994, developed by Sunsoft. It was one of those licensed games that tried to capture the look of the cartoon, with colorful sprites and detailed backgrounds that stood out among other platformers at the time.
You control Ren, the young hero, navigating through side scrolling levels filled with enemies and environmental hazards. Your main goal is to collect the thirteen Treasures of Rule to defeat the evil Dark Water. You use a sword for close combat and can find a crossbow for ranged attacks, switching between them as needed. The levels are broken into distinct screens that you clear one by one, with some light exploration and occasional tricky jumps. The pacing is deliberate, and the difficulty can spike unexpectedly in later stages. It feels like a straightforward action platformer with just enough variety to keep you pushing forward.
