The Pit is a 1982 arcade game from Atari, Inc. It came out during a time when many games were built around simple, repeatable concepts, and it fits right into that mold. You don't hear about it as much as some other titles from that year, but it has its own quiet place in the arcade lineup.
You control a small character who must dig through a multi-screen pit to reach a spaceship at the bottom. Your main goal is to get to the ship and then make it back to the surface before your fuel runs out. Along the way, you avoid falling rocks, hostile monsters, and arrows shot from the sides of the screen. The digging is methodical, but the pressure builds as enemies close in and your time dwindles. It feels tense and urgent, especially when you're scrambling upward with little margin for error.
