The Super Spy came out in 1990 as an arcade release from SNK. It was part of that era when fighting games and side-scrolling action were starting to define cabinets, but this one took a different approach by blending close combat with espionage themes. You don't hear about it as much as some other titles from the time, but it had a distinct presence.
You control a lone operative navigating a multi-story building, room by room, with the goal of rescuing hostages and defeating a terrorist leader. The game uses a behind-the-back perspective for exploration, switching to a one-on-one fighting mode when enemies appear. You can pick up weapons like knives and guns from defeated foes or grateful hostages, adding a layer of improvisation to encounters. The pacing is deliberate, almost methodical, as you clear each screen of threats and search for key items. It feels tense and unpredictable, especially when low on health and unsure what the next room holds.
