Game Overview

So here's the deal with Toki on NES: some jerk sorcerer turned our hero into an ape and kidnapped his girlfriend. Classic 80s plot, right? Now you're this weird little monkey dude spitting at everything that moves—which sounds ridiculous until you realize it's actually kinda satisfying. The spit arcs just right, and if you're lucky, you'll find power-ups that turn it into fire breath (way more useful against those pesky lava monsters).

The levels are all over the place—underwater caves, icy palaces, jungles where everything wants to murder you—and thank god they gave Toki a health bar instead of that one-hit-death nonsense from the arcade version. Pro tip: grab the football helmet when you see it. You'll need it for the boss fights, especially that fire-breathing... thing in the Golden Palace. No spoilers, but let's just say I died there. A lot.

Fun fact: the Genesis version's totally different—extra levels, rearranged enemies—but the NES one's got that weird charm where the janky controls somehow make it more fun.
