Tokimeki Memorial Taisen Tokkaedama is one of those weird, hyper-specific Sega Saturn gems—a puzzle battler that mashes up the dating sim cast of Tokimeki Memorial with competitive tile-matching chaos. You’re basically flinging colored blocks around a grid, trying to line up three of the same color while trapped pieces burst free and trigger chain reactions. Mess up, and your screen floods; nail a combo, and you’ll bury your opponent under a hailstorm of junk blocks.

The single-player modes are surprisingly fleshed out—there’s a story mode where you awkwardly flirt between matches, a straight-up arcade ladder, and even a quiz mode (if you can read Japanese). But the real fun is in versus mode, where you can absolutely ruin a friend’s day by dropping a perfectly timed 10-chain on them. It’s way more frantic than it looks at first glance.

Honestly, half the charm is watching the Tokimeki characters freak out as their carefully built strategies implode. The Saturn had some bizarre crossovers, and this one somehow works.
