Sonic R came out for the Sega Saturn in 1997, developed by Traveller's Tales and published by Sega. It arrived late in the Saturn's life, a time when 3D games were still finding their footing, and it stood out immediately for trying something different: a racing game where the characters ran instead of driving vehicles.

You control Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, or a few other familiar faces, racing through five vibrant courses filled with loops, ramps, and hidden paths. The main goal is straightforward: finish first. Key mechanics include collecting rings to boost your top speed and hunting for hidden emblems, which are often tucked away in hard to reach spots or require specific character abilities to access. The pacing is fast but uneven; some characters feel sluggish while others zip ahead almost too easily. It feels like a chaotic, slightly unpolished dash through a colorful theme park, where mastering the shortcuts matters more than perfect handling.
