Game Overview

I first played Megaman X4 on the Sega Saturn back in 1997, a time when the console was home to a lot of unique arcade-style action games. Capcom developed and published it, and it was one of the more polished 2D action titles available on the system, offering a solid alternative to the PlayStation version. It felt like a natural progression for the series, arriving when side-scrollers were still holding their own against the rising tide of 3D.

You control either the ranged specialist X or the close-quarters fighter Zero, battling through a series of themed stages to stop a new Reploid rebellion. The core gameplay involves moving screen by screen, clearing enemies, and navigating environmental hazards to reach a boss at the end. X collects new weapons from defeated Mavericks to exploit enemy weaknesses, while Zero relies on mastering his Z-Saber combos and learning special techniques. The pacing is fast and demanding, requiring quick reflexes to dodge attacks and capitalize on brief openings. It feels incredibly satisfying to finally conquer a tough stage through pure pattern recognition and execution.
