Game Overview

Sonic 3D Blast came out for the Sega Saturn in 1996, developed by Traveller's Tales. It was a strange time for Sonic games, with Sega trying to figure out how to translate the series into 3D before the Dreamcast arrived. This was their isometric take, a middle step between the classic 2D games and a full 3D adventure.

You control Sonic, but the goal is different. Instead of just racing to the finish, you have to find and free Flickies trapped inside Badniks. You bump into robots to release them, then you must herd all the Flickies from that stage into a warp ring before you can leave. The isometric perspective makes platforming and judging jumps a deliberate, sometimes frustrating task. Levels are large and encourage exploration to find hidden giant rings and special stages. The pace is slower and more methodical than any Sonic game before it, focusing on collection over pure speed. It feels like a cautious puzzle platformer wearing a Sonic skin.
