Play Tokio Senki - Eiyuu Retsuden (Japan) Online

You pick a squad of misfit warriors and fight grid battles in a pixelated neon Tokyo—simple at first, until enemies start outsmarting you and every move matters. Those little sprites pack a ton of character, especially when they barely survive and level up.

Game Overview

Tokio Senki - Eiyuu Retsuden is one of those Game Boy games that somehow slipped under the radar, which is a shame because it’s got this weirdly satisfying mix of chunky pixel battles and old-school tactical depth. You start off picking a ragtag squad of heroes—samurai, ninjas, the works—and suddenly you’re knee-deep in grid-based fights across a neon-drenched, slightly dystopian Tokyo.

The first few battles trick you into thinking it’s simple, but then enemies start flanking you, and suddenly you’re sweating over whether to heal your tank or risk a counterattack. The sprites are tiny but full of personality, and there’s something oddly charming about watching your little guys level up after barely scraping through a fight. If you’ve ever lost hours to Fire Emblem or Final Fantasy Tactics, this feels like their scrappier, more compact cousin.

It’s not perfect—the translation’s a bit rough, and the music loops forever—but there’s a real “just one more turn” pull to it. I ended up replaying the last mission three times because I refused to let my favorite swordsman die. Classic Game Boy jank, in the best way.
