Compete in Olympic events like the 100 meter dash and long jump, mash buttons to sprint, and aim for new world records in Track n Field on NES.
Track n Field came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1987, developed and published by Konami. It was one of those straightforward sports titles that felt right at home on the NES, focusing purely on the action without any complicated menus or story. You just picked it up and started playing, which was pretty common for games back then.
You control an athlete competing in a series of Olympic style events, like the 100 meter dash, long jump, and javelin throw. The main objective is to beat the qualifying times or distances to advance, and ultimately set a new world record. The signature mechanic is the rapid button mashing to build up speed; you have to tap the A and B buttons as fast as you can to make your runner sprint. For field events, timing becomes everything, like hitting the button at the exact right moment during your approach for the long jump to get the perfect launch. The pacing is relentless because the qualifying standards get tough quickly, and the margin for error is slim. It feels like a genuine test of endurance, both for your athlete on the screen and for your own fingers.
