Trinea came out for the Super Nintendo in 1993, developed by Jorudan. It was one of those action-puzzle games that felt distinct from the bigger platformers and RPGs of the era, a quieter, more methodical experience that relied on switching between characters to progress.
You control a party of three heroes: a knight, a mage, and a rogue. Your goal is to guide them through a series of single-screen puzzle rooms, collecting keys and reaching the exit. The core mechanic is instantly swapping between the three to use their unique abilities; the knight smashes cracked walls, the mage freezes enemies in place, and the rogue disarms traps and fits through narrow passages. The puzzles demand you think several steps ahead, often using one character to set up a safe path for another. It is a game of deliberate pacing, where a wrong move or a mistimed swap can force a quick reset of the room. Playing it feels like carefully orchestrating a small, specialized team to overcome a series of clever obstacles.
