Play Tsuppari Oozumou (Japan) Online
Control a sumo wrestler, shove opponents out of the ring, block attacks, and manage your stamina in this 1987 NES sports game.
Tsuppari Oozumou came out for the NES in 1987, developed by Tecmo. It was part of that wave of early sports and fighting games that tried to capture a specific activity, in this case sumo wrestling, with the limited but expressive tools of the 8-bit era. It didn't have the flash of some other titles, but it had a clear, singular focus.
You control a sumo wrestler, and your only goal is to shove your opponent out of the ring or force them to touch the ground with any part of their body besides their feet. The main mechanics are built around timing your shoves, blocking incoming attacks, and managing your stamina, which depletes with every aggressive move. The pacing is deliberate, almost tense, as you wait for an opening in your opponent's defense. Getting the timing right on a well-placed shove and watching your rival stumble backward off the dohyo feels genuinely rewarding.
