Play Ultima - Exodus (Japan) Online
You pick four weirdos, forget torches, then die in a pitch-black dungeon—but somehow crawling through menus and scribbling maps on paper feels weirdly rewarding. That wizard’s “best” spell is literally just throwing rocks.

Ultima: Exodus came out on the NES in 1987, developed by Origin Systems. It was part of that wave of early console RPGs that tried to bring a serious, computer-style adventure to the living room, complete with its own cloth map. You knew you were in for something different, something that demanded more than just quick reflexes.
You control the Avatar and a party of three other characters, guiding them across an overworld and into towns and dungeons, screen by screen. The main goal is to gather three magic talismans to stop the evil Exodus. You explore first-person dungeons in total darkness unless you have a torch or a light spell, fight monsters in turn-based combat where you position your party members, and manage a lot of inventory and spells with very limited space. It's a slow, deliberate game that can be brutally unforgiving if you're not prepared. Figuring it all out, mapping the labyrinths by hand, and finally overcoming a tough dungeon gives you a real sense of hard-won accomplishment.
