Ultima: Exodus came out on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1989, developed by Origin Systems. It was part of that wave of ambitious, complex RPGs trying to find a home on consoles, a time when you really had to sit down with the manual to have any idea what you were doing.
You control the Avatar and a custom party of three other characters, exploring the world of Sosaria screen by screen, fighting monsters in turn-based combat, and delving into multi-level dungeons. The main goal is to recover three magic talismans to prove your worth and ultimately confront the evil Exodus. The game is slow and demanding; navigation is strict, resources are scarce, and the threat of a total party wipe is constant. It feels like a long, deliberate puzzle where every small victory is earned.
