Ultimate Air Combat came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1991, published by Activision. It was one of those later NES titles that tried to push the hardware a bit further, offering a mix of different flight combat styles in a single package. The game doesn't have the same name recognition as some other shooters from that era, but it had a certain ambition for its time.
You pilot one of three fighter jets, each with different handling and weapon loadouts, across 36 missions to defeat the dictator Don Gwano. The gameplay shifts between two distinct modes: a first-person cockpit view for air-to-air dogfights against enemy fighters, and an isometric perspective for ground attack runs where you bomb tanks and installations. The mission objectives are clear, but the difficulty is steep, with aggressive enemy AI and limited continues. Finishing a sortie and hearing that mission complete theme is a genuine relief.
