Game Overview

Vermilion (or Sword of Vermilion, depending on where you played it) is one of those early Genesis RPGs that felt ambitious but kinda rough around the edges. You start off as this prince whose kingdom gets wrecked, and suddenly you're wandering through these weirdly empty towns talking to NPCs who give you cryptic hints. The combat's first-person, which was unusual for the time—you just swing your sword at monsters that pop up in dark corridors.

It’s got that classic Yu Suzuki vibe where you can tell he was trying to push the hardware, but the dungeons drag on forever and the magic system is… not great. Still, there’s something charming about how janky it is. The overworld map looks like someone spilled watercolors on graph paper, and the music’s got those crunchy Genesis synths that either annoy you or get stuck in your head for days.

Fun fact: The box bragged about "300 hours of gameplay," which is hilarious because half that time is probably spent lost in identical-looking caves. If you’re into retro RPGs with more ambition than polish, it’s a weird little time capsule.
