Wario's Woods came out for the NES in 1994, published by Nintendo. It was one of the last official releases for the system, arriving well into the 16-bit era, and it offered a different kind of puzzle experience compared to many of its contemporaries.
You control Toad, who runs around a single-screen arena filled with colored blocks and monsters. The goal is to clear each stage by matching groups of three or more same-colored blocks or bombs; you can pick up and throw blocks, bombs, or even enemies to create these matches. The real twist is that you often have to stack enemies on top of bombs or other blocks to set off chain reactions, and the pace gets frantic as more creatures pour in from the top of the screen. It feels surprisingly tactical and physical for a puzzle game, demanding quick decisions and precise throws under pressure.
