Wario's Woods is one of those weird, underrated puzzle games that feels like Tetris got turned inside out. Instead of moving blocks, you're Toad—yes, that Toad—running around a pit full of monsters and bombs, frantically stacking them just right to make them explode. The trick? Match a bomb with two or more same-colored monsters, and boom—they vanish. Clear five at once, and a diamond pops up, which wipes out every monster of its color when you break it.
What makes it fun is how weirdly physical it feels. Toad doesn’t just drop pieces—he grabs whole stacks, plucks single monsters from the middle, kicks them across the screen, or even climbs up walls to catch falling ones. It’s chaotic, especially when you’re scrambling to stop the pile from reaching the top.
There’s a bunch of modes, including a full single-player campaign (with boss fights!), versus matches, and a time attack. The SNES version has smoother controls thanks to extra buttons, but even the NES one holds up. It’s the kind of puzzle game where you’ll mess up a lot at first, then suddenly pull off a ridiculous chain reaction and feel like a genius.
