Play Wave Race Online
Tiny jet skis, brutal AI—miss a buoy and you're toast. Those pixel waves actually push back when you take turns too wide.

Wave Race came out on the Game Boy in 1992, developed by Nintendo EAD. It was one of those early handheld racers that felt ambitious, trying to capture a sense of speed and water physics on a system not exactly known for either. You were racing jet skis, not karts, which already set it apart from most other games in your pocket at the time.
You control a rider on a jet ski, navigating through a series of checkpoint buoys on twisting aquatic courses. The main objective is straightforward: finish the race in first place. The signature mechanics are the buoy system, where missing a red one or hitting them out of order slows you down significantly, and the water physics themselves, which actually push your craft around, making tight turns a genuine challenge. The pacing is fast and the AI is brutally efficient; a single mistake often costs you the win. It feels like a constant, tense fight against both your opponents and the water.
