Game Overview

WCW vs. nWo World Tour came out for the Nintendo 64 in 1997, published by THQ. It was one of the earlier wrestling games on the system, arriving at a time when the console was still building its library of multiplayer titles. The game capitalized directly on the Monday Night Wars era of professional wrestling, letting players step into the ring as WCW stars or members of the rebellious nWo faction.

You control a wrestler from a roster that includes Sting, Hollywood Hogan, and Lex Luger, among others. The main objective is to win matches by pinfall, submission, or count-out using a combination of strikes, grapples, and special moves. Signature mechanics include performing taunts to build a momentum meter, executing strong grapples by holding the directional pad during a lock-up, and pulling off finishing moves once your meter is full. The pacing is quick, with matches that can turn quickly based on a well-timed reversal or a missed opportunity. It feels responsive and chaotic in the best way, like you're actually trading momentum back and forth in a real bout.
